What is Gua Sha

Stone on skin. One of the oldest beauty tools on earth.

Gua sha (&刮痧;) is a traditional practice originating in China and Southeast Asia, used for centuries to move stagnant blood, drain lymphatic fluid, and release facial tension. The scraping motion creates gentle pressure that stimulates circulation and sculpts the face over time.

Unlike modern skincare devices — which require charging, replacement parts, or ongoing subscriptions — gua sha is a stone. It works exactly as well in 2026 as it did in 1326. No batteries. No expiration date. No monthly fee.

Black Obsidian Gua Sha Stone
How It Works

Three movements. Five minutes. Real results.

01

Apply your tallow

Take a pea-sized amount of Primordial Tallow Balm and warm between your fingertips until it melts. Press lightly into clean skin — the tallow creates the perfect glide surface for the stone.

02

Scrape with intention

Hold the stone at a 15° angle against your skin. Use gentle, upward strokes — along the jawline, under the cheekbones, across the forehead. Let the stone do the work. No pressure needed.

03

Let the work happen

Most people notice puffiness reduction within days. Visible sculpting and jawline definition typically develop within 2–4 weeks of daily practice. Consistency is everything.

The perfect pairing

Gua sha was made for an oil-based moisturizer. Ours happens to be the most ancestral one on earth.

Water-based creams absorb too fast and create friction. Tallow glides effortlessly, nourishes deeply, and absorbs cleanly — leaving your skin exactly what the stone needs to move smoothly without dragging. The combination isn’t modern marketing. It’s just how these tools were always used.

“My grandmother used a jade stone on her face every morning. I thought it was superstition. Three months in, I understand why her skin looked the way it did at 80.”

Common Questions

Everything you need to know.

How often should I use gua sha?

Daily is ideal, but even 3–4 times per week produces visible results. Morning use helps with puffiness and drainage; evening use is better for tension relief. Five minutes is all it takes.

Do I need to use oil or moisturizer first?

Yes — always. Dry skin creates friction and can cause micro-tears. Tallow balm is ideal because it’s oil-based, glides effortlessly, and absorbs cleanly. Never use gua sha on bare dry skin.

Which stone should I choose?

All three work equally well mechanically. Obsidian is grounding and dramatic. Jade is the traditional choice with natural cooling properties. The heart shape is best for contouring along the jawline and cheekbones.

How long until I see results?

Puffiness reduction is often visible after the first session — lymphatic drainage is nearly immediate. Sculpting and jawline definition take 2–4 weeks of daily use to become noticeable.

How do I clean my gua sha stone?

Rinse with warm water and mild soap after each use. Dry thoroughly. Natural stone can chip if dropped on hard surfaces — handle with care and store in the pouch when not in use.
